An approach to emerging optical and optoelectronic applications based on NiO micro- and nanostructures

Abstract Nickel oxide (NiO) is one of the very few p -type semiconducting oxides, study which gaining increasing attention in recent years due to its potential applicability many emerging fields technological research. Actually, a growing number scientific works focus on NiO-based electrochromic devices, high-frequency spintronics, fuel cell electrodes, supercapacitors, photocatalyst, chemical/gas sensors, or magnetic among others. However, less has been done so far development optical field this versatile transition metal still lags performance despite applicability. This review could contribute with novelty and new forefront insights NiO micro nanostructures promising optoelectronic devices. As some examples, lighting microresonators, waveguides, limiters, neuromorphic applications are reviewed analyzed work. These functionalities, together other developments based nanostructures, can open research material remains scarcely explored from an perspective, would pave way future advances.
